JNU News Violence LIVE: Protests Students with Teachers: No Arrests Yet

JNU Live Update and News: Protests Across Country in Solidarity With Students, Teachers: No Arrests Yet

JNU Violence LIVE Updates: Hours after a masked mob brutally attacked students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University, students across the country took to the streets to protest against the horrific incident. In Mumbai, students from across educational institutions gathered at the Gateway of India and raised slogans — some against the ABVP that was allegedly behind the attack — demanding that the Centre act against the assailants who also defaced JNU property.

Students of the Aligarh Muslim University took out a candlelight march, while students in Hyderabad held a demonstration. Kolkata’s Jadavpur University and Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India also joined in the protests.

Left defaming JNU, turning the university into centre of hooliganism: Giriraj Singh

Union minister Giriraj Singh on Monday accused the left students of defaming the Jawaharlal University and has said that they have turned the university into a centre of hooliganism. "The way the left party workers have created a ruckus in JNU campus and have beaten up student, I don't know what they want JNU to become in this country. Left students are defaming Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), they have turned the University into a centre of hooliganism", Singh told ANI. Meanwhile, union minister Smriti Irani has urged that the universities should not be converted into political centres while asserting that investigation will reveal more details of the incident. "Investigation has begun, so will not be right to speak on it now, but Universities should not be turned into hubs of politics, neither should students be used as political pawns", Irani told ANI.

Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police.

Over 20 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as chaos reigned on the campus late in the evening.

The violence drew strong reactions from opposition parties which hit out at the BJP and accused "those in power" of trying to scuttle the voice of students.

Senior Union ministers and JNU alumni S Jaishankar and Nirmala Sitharaman swiftly condemned the incident. Sitharaman asserted that the government wants universities to be safe spaces for all students.

The Home and HRD ministries sought reports from Delhi Police and JNU administration, respectively. Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Delhi Police chief and enquired about the situation at JNU. Sources said the violence started at around 5 PM.

The JNU administration said "masked miscreants armed with sticks were roaming around, damaging property and attacking people" and that police had been called in to maintain law and order.

The students alleged that the attackers entered hostels and assaulted students and teachers. Video footage aired by some TV channels showed a group of men, who were brandishing hockey sticks, moving around a building.

Delhi Police said it conducted a flag march and the situation was brought under control after it got a written request from the JNU administration.

The Left-controlled JNUSU and the ABVP blamed each other for the violence. The students' union alleged that its members, including Ghosh, were injured in stone pelting by ABVP members.

But the RSS-backed students' organisation alleged that its members were brutally attacked by Left-affiliated student outfits and 25 of them were injured, while 11 were missing. Among the injured was the secretary of its JNU unit.

The violence occurred while a public meeting by the JNU Teachers' Association was being held. "We had organised a peace meet at the tea point at 5 pm. As soon as it got over, we saw that a large number of people entered the campus and they started arbitrarily attacking teachers and students," R Mahalaxmi, a professor of History department, said.

"How did such a large number of people with rods in their hands enter the campus, that is what we are wondering about. I think they were political activist instigated by the people who always call us anti-nationals," Pradeep Shinde, another professor, said.

In a video shared online, Ghosh could be seen bleeding from the head. "I have been brutally beaten up by people wearing masks.... I was there with one of my activists when I was brutally beaten up. I am not even able to talk," she is heard saying in the video.

Earlier, JNU registrar Pramod Kumar said in a statement, "This is an urgent message for the entire JNU community that there is a law and order situation on the campus.... The JNU Administration has called the police to maintain order." "This is the moment to remain calm and be on the alert.... Efforts are already being made to tackle the miscreants," he added.

The JNUSU claimed that "ABVP members wearing masks were moving around on the campus with lathis, rods and hammers". "They are pelting bricks...getting into hostels and beating up students. Several teachers have also been beaten up," the JNUSU claimed.

(JNU Students Union President Aishe Ghosh was also among the injured. Reacting on the incident, her father called the situation across the country "volatile" and said even he faced the risk of being beaten up. Ghosh’s mother demanded the varsity Vice Chancellor's resignation and affirmed that she would not ask her daughter to back out of the protests.)

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that Left student organisations SFI, AISA and DSF were behind the violence. "Around 25 students have been seriously injured in the attack and there is no information about whereabouts of 11 students. Many ABVP members are being attacked in hostels and the hostels are being vandalised by the Leftist goons," the ABVP claimed.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "I am so shocked to know about the violence at JNU. Students attacked brutally. Police should immediately stop violence and restore peace. How will the country progress if our students will not be safe inside univ campus?" Kejriwal said he also spoke to the L-G over the issue.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal condemned Sunday's violence and said the situation was being "closely monitored". "The violence in JNU against students and teachers is highly condemnable. Directed @DelhiPolice to take all possible steps in coordination with JNU Administration to maintain law and order & take action against the perpetrators of violence. The situation is being closely monitored," he tweeted.

The Congress alleged that the attack on JNU students was a "state-sponsored mayhem". Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the injured at the AIIMS.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury blamed the ABVP for the violence and alleged that the attacks were "planned" by those in power. "It is a planned attack by those in power, which is afraid of the resistance provided by JNU to its Hindutva agenda," he tweeted.

An HRD Ministry official was quoted as saying by PTI, "We have sought an immediate report from the JNU registrar about the situation on the campus. We have spoken to the vice chancellor and Delhi police officials to ensure that peace is maintained on the campus."

A large section of JNU students have been taking part in the protests against the amended Citizenship Act in the national capital. The university was earlier embroiled in a major row over alleged anti-national slogans being raised by some students in February 2016.

Internet being shut down covertly in Delhi, say researchers

Researchers with a collective tracking internet censorship, Internet Democracy, on Friday tweeted that preliminary tests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar showed that the internet shutdowns during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act were being done covertly.
"There’s not just blocking but also throttling (slowing down) of internet. Documentation from the ground up is important. Differences across network providers, protest venues, times help us understand details of censorship & interference, get clues about methods and equipment used," the researcher said.

He is seen giving assurances that the police is present at the campus to protect the students and announcing that anti-social elements are causing the violence by pelting stones, tubelights, petrol bombs.

Protests on 15 December were well-planned, not spontaneous, says Delhi Police official

Additional DCP (South East) Kumar Gyanesh told ANI that he saw protesters covering tear gas shells with wet blankets to minimise their impact. Petrol bombs were also held. "These things do not happen on the spot, it shows that it was a conspiracy," he said.

Gyanesh added, "There has been no violence for the last 36-40 hours. No weapon was used. Only tear gas was used to control crowd."

Jamia, AMU under siege, counsels tell SC bench as hearing commences

As the Supreme Court Bench, comprising CJI SA Bobde and Justices BR Gavai and Suryakant, began hearing the pleas against the protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia, seeking that FIRs not be filed in the case and action be taken against the Delhi Police.

Counsel tells the Bench that with the passage of the amended Act, discontent was seen across the country. "This Act was tried to be painted as Anti Muslims and the first protest was sparked in the North East. There is a siege in Jamia and AMU and the right to peaceful protest should be upheld," the counsels submitted.

Bobde responded by saying that each of the aforementioned incidents happened in different places and "different steps have been taken by different authorities".

Go to appropriate court for establishing facts, says CJI

Delhi-based lawyer Mehmood Pracha says before the Bench that in the absence of the Supreme Court's intervention, the situation "will spiral further", even though incidents of violence have stopped.

When Pracha fails to inform the Bench about the number of buses burnt in Delhi, CJI Bobde says, "You are not aware of facts and we are not a Court of establishing facts."

FIRs cannot be filed against students if you want peace, argues Indira Jaising

Senior counsel Indira Jaising begins her submissions, bringing the Court's attention to the relief sought in the petition filed by Vaibhav Mishra and others. "FIRs are being filed against students across the country. My request is only this that let the law take its own course, but please pass an order," she urged the Bench.
She argued that if peace is to be maintained, FIRs cannot be filed innocent students. She said that relief is granted through peace measures, to which CJI Bobde says, "If a police officer sees that some stones are being pelted, should an FIR not be filed?"

Jaising reiterated her plea of no coercive action being taken against students.

Indira Jaising seeks free humanitarian medical aid for those injured in protests

Jaising says that universities are private property and police can enter campuses only after the Vice-Chancellor's authorisation. She further said that she seeks free medical aid for those injured in protests. "(Colin) Gonsalves will tell you how one of his own interns lost eyesight and there are people who have broken bones. It is the duty of the medical services to provide free medical aid in emergency situations," she submitted.

She also questioned where the students are supposed to go now that the university has suddenly been shut before the scheduled date.

AMU is in a disturbing state, students have suffered injuries, says Colin Gonsalves

Beginning his submission, senior counsel Colin Gonsalves says that an impression has been tried to be created that the protesting students are rioters. The Bench refuses to let Gonsalves read out the Jamia Vice Chancellor's statement on the protest published in a newspaper.

Gonsalves continues with his submissions, saying that Jamia is now in a better state, but AMU is in a disturbing state, with several students sustaining severe injuries. He urges the bench to send a fact-finding committee to Aligarh, which may ensure that the torture of students ends.

Bobde assures him that some action will be taken, but cannot assure that a retired Judge will be sent.

67 persons sustained injuries, no student arrested, submits S-G Tushar Mehta

Court asks Solicitor General Tushar Mehta about the two concerns - first, students being arrested without notice to authorities and second, no medical attention being given to students.
In response, Mehta submits that 67 persons, including students and other miscreants, sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. Several police personnel also sustained injuries. He added that no students were arrested or lodged in jail.
CJI Bobde questions him about the claim that there are hospitalised students who are not getting attention. Mehta says that the Delhi Police had to make use of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and one of the protesters picked up the shell and tried to throw it back when it exploded and that is why they sustained injuries.

SC turns down petitions in Jamia, AMU protests, directs parties to approach high courts

The Bench opines that it is not feasible to appoint one committee to look into the protests, given the nature of the matter and dispute and the vast area over which the matter is spread.

Supreme Court directs the petitioners to approach the High Courts within whose jurisdiction the incidents have occurred. The Supreme Court says that the High Court may appoint former judges of the Supreme Court to conduct inquiry after hearing the Union of India and the concerned state government.

Centre stopped railway services in Bengal over one or two minor incidents: Mamata

Terming the ongoing violence and arson in the state over the citizenship law as a "few minor incidents", West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said just because the BJP has requisite numbers in Parliament, it cannot bully the states into enforcing the law.
Banerjee was leading a protest march from Jadavpur to Jadu Babu's Bazar, against Citizenship Amendment Act. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan were also present in the protest march.

Barbaric' beatings in Jamia by police, allege activists, students

"Barbaric" beatings, abuse and humiliation were perpetrated on students by the police during their crackdown on those protesting against the citizenship law on Sunday in Jamia Millia Islamia, alleged injured students and activists on Tuesday.
For Mohammad Mustafa, an MBA student in Jamia, who recalled the "beatings" he received at the hands of the police said that he was studying in the library along with 25 others, including around 10-12 girls. "I was beaten mercilessly and I fell unconscious. I was taken to New Friends Colony police station, they made us sit on the cold floor. I was not given any treatment although I felt like I was going to die," Mustafa alleged as he spoke to the media.
Many in the group alleged that the most "barbaric" attack was in the library of the varsity in which most students were injured. They alleged that the police used brutal force on them.

Consumer Complaints Forum

Submit your Complaints at Grahak Complaints
